From 1896-98 she resisted the Weyler reconcentration and the operations of the Colonial Army in the area, characterized by intense war activity. She cared for and defended the wounded with weapons and her hospital could never be located and taken over by the Spaniards thanks to her tenacious resistance.
For her bravery, Major General Antonio Maceo conferred on her the rank of Captain. During the Republic she did not occupy public positions, she enjoyed recognition and respect and some of her sons participated in liberal affairs during the Republic. She died in the neighborhood of Lajas, Consolación del Sur, Pinar del Río, on August 23, 1915. She is recognized as the most emblematic heroine of her territory.
